Hi Alois..

I would like to know what are the exercises i should do so that i can strengthen my wrist.  When i play against my partner i feel as if the ball has some weight when he strikes it. Is it because of the spin and his wrist flexibility?

Hi Amit,

It is not really a matter of strength of the wrist but the timing of your stroke and the relaxation in your wrist so that it moves through a greater range.

I dont want to make another thread for my question, but. Some site said that wrist should be in fixtated position when you r stroking the ball. So there should not be any "up and down" movement. Is this true?

HI Yan Huo,

When you are learning you can have your wrist quite fixed to make the stroke as consistent as possible by having less moving parts.  As you increase your confidence you can start to introduce the wrist a little by relaxing it and allowing it to move freely with your swing.

I find that the use of my wrist is a lot more natural on the backhand. As Alois mentioned, on the forehand this can happen if you are quite relaxed. You can also use the wrist on the forehand to generate sidespin. Our lesson on the forehand sidespin topspin covers this.

Hey Amit!

I have a problem like yours, but if you aren't able to use your wrist as much, you can also get a lot of spin from your forearm. When you do this, you have to do a bigger motion as usual, but it's realy effective, too.

I hope this helped you,

Lukas

If you see Vladimir Samsonov's Forehand when he does his backswing, you can see how the wrist works in his movement. It's not intentional, just try to relax it all you can, but holding straight your bat, and your natural movement is going to generate that motion. After you do that, you are going to see more spin and speed in your strokes...
