Hi I just ordered my first custom bat: TSP blazze soft touch all+ blade with kokutaku rubbers. As im only 14 it cost quite a few weeks worth of pocket money! just wanted to know what everyone elses first custom bat was and how long you used it before you changed it.

Hi James,

Thanks for the great question. My first bat was not a proper Table Tennis bat. It had some pimples on it which could not generate any spin at all.

My first "custom" bat was made using the blade of my first bat. I took the rubbers off which wasn't easy because they were glued on so well and then I sanded it back to clean up the parts of the rubber that were still stuck on. Then I got some used Mark V from the Table Tennis club as I was part of and stuck it on my bat. The A graders put there old rubbers that they did not want to use anymore if a cupboard for people like me.

So to summarise, my first custom bat was a blade with used Mark V stuck on it. This was quite a fast combination and it did take some time to get used to. In hindsight it may have been better to move to a pre-made bat with a slightly slower rubber first and then progress onto a custom made bat.

So if you are reading this and have a custom made bat, then be sure to leave a comment and let us know what your first custom bat was.

My first custom bat was a tibhar stratus power wood blade with xiom vega pro MAX on BH, xiom vega europe MAX on FH. Coming from a premade bat, this was much much too fast for me. My next pair of rubbers I put on it were slower so I could increase control. Again now, even though I am much better now, I bought my next set of rubbers that are even slower then what I have on now. If I could do it over again, I would have started with rubbers recommended by Alois and Jeff, going with Mark V, as these are the rubbers I will be putting on next.
