Hey Alois and Jeff,

When I'm training with my teammates I always notice 2 problems.

1st problem is they play the ball left right left right all the time and at some point I can't stand the pace and lose the ball.

2nd problem is when I'm playig forehand topspin and get it back on my forehand 2-3 times and then my opponent just plays a topspin on my backhand and I'm not able to bring that ball back because im not fast enough.

Is there any advice u can get me to overcome that 2 problems? Maybe a training method u reccomend me?

Greetings from Germany, Johannes

Hi Johannes,

For the first issue, practice your sideways footwork movement.  Make sure you are facing the table rather than turning side on.  This will give you the best chance to reach the ball as they are placing you sideways.

Make sure your footwork movements are a sideways shuffling or jumping while facing forward. Lots of footwork drills will help with this.

For the second issue, think about recovering to a balanced position each time after you make the forehand.  What tends to happen is that after one or two forehands you will turn your left shoulder towards the table.  This makes it difficult to play a backhand.  Keep a more face on and central position.  You may also prefer your forehand so you are wishing the ball to come there.  Remember each ball can go anywhere on the table so be ready for both sides.
