Hi Alois,

I am trying to decide whether I should use a traditional Penhold block or use my reverse side instead.

I realised Xu Xin uses his rpb for blocking as well as looping.

What do you think I should do?

Also, if I should use the RPB, what is the technique for blocking with it?

Hi Kabeer,

You can use both or either the traditional block or RPB block.  I feel like the traditional block is a little more stable and easier to learn however if you learn to block with the RPB you can transition easier to an attacking shot if the ball comes to you a little slower or easier.

To block with the RPB you can follow the basic principles of the Backhand Block tutorial.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
