Returning a fast long sidespin

Strokes

I have difficulty returning a fast long sidespin.  Often I can't return such a serve.  Also, some opponents can return to me during a rally with fast long sidespin.

Is there a video on this topic?

Hi Murray,

This is a difficult stroke and quite advanced.

We have the tutorial on the Dealing With Sidespin During a Rally.

If it is a sidespin push then you can make a straight topspin.  Brush the ball finely and fast so that you are counteracting the sidespin on the ball.  You can also use the angle of your bat to counteract the sidespin.

Banana Flick

The banana flick has become one of the most important returns in table tennis. It allows you to attack almost any short ball and places your opponent under immediate pressure. Still it is a difficult stroke that takes a lot of practice to master.

For fast long topspin, I suggest you stand slightly further from the table. Standing too near the table makes attacking long balls harder.

Or you can shorten your stroke and still play the ball early.
