Hi, Alois.

I have been learning a lot from Pingskills and after half a year of playing for my club, I am preparing to compete in the London Youth Games. Do you have any suggestions for preparing myself? Thanks you.

Hi Kabeer,

Well done on taking the step of playing in a  tournament.

The main thing is to go in there with an attitude of learning as much as you can.  Work at playing your best on the day.  In preparation, think about playing a lot of matches and tailoring your training towards more random situations where you don't know where the ball is coming.

We do have the 52 Week Training Plan where the last 8 weeks are focused on training in preparation for a tournament.

The Controller

Most drills involve one person performing the exercise and the other placing the ball as required by the exercise. We call this person placing the ball the controller. When you are acting as the controller it is a great opportunity to practice your blocking and concentration. As blocking is an important part of the game you should be 100% focused at this time. You also owe it to your training partner to be blocking effectively so they get the most from their exercise.
