What do you recommend for player with penhold grip. what style do you recommend they use for the penhold backhand counter-hit during practice? Reverse or regular penhold backhand, if regular then when is the reverse recommended to be used? If this player is very good with regular penhold and newbie with reverse, should they be practicing the reverse at all if Biggest tournament is 2 months away?

Hi Greg,

The regular backhand is usually used for blocking and counterfeit strokes.  The Reverse is used against backspin and when playing more aggressive strokes.  To reach your potential you need to be able to use both.

I would work on it a little over the next few months but focus mainly on the regular backhand.  After the tournament you can spend a few months working on the Reverse and get it strong before your next important matches.
