Strategy
Dear pingskills coaches,
what style, or what strokes do you advice to someone who plays with long pimples?
i just use them for about 5 weeks, so i'm not sure what my best strokes with them are.
I think i try to block, just hold the bat, so the ball falls dead behind the net. But, i sometimes go far from the table, and then i try to chop or just block.
Oh yes, when i'm a bit more used to the long pimples, i'll try to switch sides of my bat, so you have kind of a surprise effect.
regards,
a fan from Belgium
Hi Ivo,
I think you need to work out whether you would like ot defend or be an attacking player. If you want to be defensive, then going back and chopping with the long pimples works well. You can watch videos of Joo Se Hyuk of Korea for a great example of what to do with Long Pimples as a defender.
You can however, also use them close to the table. It is an enjoyable way to play Table Tennis. One of my favourite player of the last century was Lo Chuen Tsung of Hong Kong. You can see a video of him on Youtube. Lo Chuen Tsung Entertaining to say the least.
You would do well to watch him and copy some of what he does.
Question actions
When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
