Long Pimple against no spin ball

Hi, Pingskills

I have already asked you about LP technique against backspin ball. You told me to hit the ball flat, even from distance. But, what about no spin ball. Whether it is serve or counter hit, if I chop, the ball goes high. Main thing is, also, what to do when I am distanced from the table, and my opponent smashes or drives flat and ball has no spin.

HI Sasha,

When they smash and you are far away from the table you need to push the ball more forward as the ball will want to dive down off the pimples.

This is the same off a no spin ball closer to the table.

Try a few different angles and see what works for you.

When you tense your muscles too much you actually get less power and become more tired. However when you relax the opposite happens. It's why all the best players look like they are hitting the ball so hard without much effort.

So, by push, you mean to go with my blade quite flat, am I right?

Yes, that is right when close to the table.   When you are further away with the smash you can have your bat more open but still get the stroke more forward.

So, basic thing is not to chop, but to go flatter on the boll, to hit the middle part of the boll, if I am right

And one more thing. When I am distanced from the table, what kind of effect would produce the movement like backhand side spin serve. Something similar you have given in you video how Joo Se Huyk curves the ball. Can I do that with long pimple against flat ball or smash, counter hit, etc.

You need to rely on their spin more than anything to generate the sidespin off the pimples.

I understand, I do that, and it works when there is a spin, but, I get a little tangled when my opponents keep hitting flat balls when I am further from the table. That's why I ask you, how to get the shot more forward, how to move my arm, in what position should it be? Thank you very much for your previous answers

And one more thing, what is deception with Long Pimples, and how to achieve deceptive spin with it? Thanks

Hi Sasha,

Just by using it you will make it difficult for players that haven't played against it much before.

I think the first thing is to just learn to play with them.  The better you can play with them and learn to return different types of balls the better a player you will be.

OK, I will do that. What do you suggest about it, how to start, what to practice with LP first, so I could use it more effectively.

Start with the basic block and chop block.  We show you the Long Pimple Chop Block in our lessons on Strokes and Techniques.
