Strokes

Hi Alois

I am working on my backhand strokes . I am comfortable with the backhand block & counterhit but struggle with the topspin. Especially during a match when the ball has different level of spins, the ball either goes into the net or away from the table. Also when the ball has heavy backspin , I almost always am not able to lift the ball like how I am able to do on the forehand side. Do I use my wrist more when playing the backhand topspin? Also do i finish the stroke swiinging all the way through with the bat facing the table?

Thanks
Regards
Grenville

Hi Grenville,

Once you have developed control with the backhand topspin you can start to use your wrist a lot more.  The wrist movement on the backhand is a lot easier than with the forehand.

The wrist movement needs to be fast to generate the lift especially off the heavy backspin ball.  Your bat doesn't have to turn all the way over.  If you are finding the ball is always going into the net then get the bat to finish higher and don't turn it over so much.  This will make the stroke more simple.

Stop Coming Back to Ready Position! Do This Instead…

Most players are told to always return to the ready position after every stroke but that might be hurting your game. In this video, we reveal a smarter way to recover:

✔ Track the ball immediately after your shot
✔ Move your racket into position for the next shot instead of blindly resetting
✔ Improve your timing, balance, and flow during rallies

Whether you’re a beginner or advanced player, understanding this subtle change can have a big impact on your consistency and speed around the table.
