Strokes
Hi! I do appreciate the information you have put out in regards to the defensive style of play. There is so little training available for defenders that it is welcome.
I know how to hit heavy chops, and sidespin chops, I would love to learn how to hit a deceptive looking no spin chop. I am using inverted rubber, btw. How I have been doing it up to this point is the have the ball contact my rubber as close to the handle as possible when I chop. What are your suggestions for a dead chop?
Thanks,
Bob
Hi Bob,
Hitting the ball closer to the handle and also up higher on the bat will help to generate less spin.
The other thing to focus on is at the point of contact, just push your bat forward a little more to get a flatter contact rather than a brushing down contact on the ball.
How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
