Strokes
Hello!
I'm a Chinese penhold player and I am learning to use both the traditional penhold backhand and the reverse penhold backhand when playing. When using the traditional penhold backhand, I have gotten the technique down (pressure on the index finger, thumb used to press the angle down, last 3 fingers stacked on top of each other, all used to make a punching motion), but I don't feel like I have enough power in my stroke. When I watch some traditional penholders like Kaii Yoshida, I wonder how he uses the traditional backhand drive so effectively (he variates the backhand drive with the Japanese penhold smash). Could you please help me with this? Thank you in advance.
Hi Andy,
Try to turn your body more and use your waist to generate the speed in the stroke. You can contact the ball closer to your left hip rather than in front of your body. Then to make the smash you extend that even further so that you are hitting the ball from outside the left hip and turning your waist more.
How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
