I am fairly new to tt so my topspin forehands and backhands aren’t great, I have 1 practice partner who I play with 2-3 times a week but he is better than me and almost always wins. My power isn’t a problem but need to work on consistsncy by myself. I have tried dropping the ball then hitting it but found it to be detrimental since I get too used to the flat spin, and ideas on how I could more effectively practice.

Hi Luke,

The best way is to find a friend to hit the ball to you so that you can practice these skills.

Otherwise if they are not good enough to hit with you could get them to use Multiball.  Take a look at this section on Multiball.

Disguising Spin

To confuse your opponent you need to produce variations in spin. Just by mixing up heavy backspin and light backspin, you make it really difficult for your opponent to control the ball. In this master class we discuss the best ways to achieve this.
