Strokes
Good morning, Alois and Jeff
I have had a good look at your videos and answers to questions regarding this issue and 3rd ball attack.
My question is how to get myself in an attacking first position if the return of my serve does not allow me to attack.
This happens when the opponent returns short with backspin or plays a touch shot.
Am aware that I need to play my serve so that I get a suitable return, nevertheless my question is how to deal with a service return ball that does not allow me to attack, and all that I am able to do is perhaps a push.
When watching the WTT pro matches, this happens. Short serve, short return, push vs push, then eventually one player is able to attack on a loose ball. So how do I make this happen?
Thank you
Hi Philip,
The first thing is to focus on your ability to push short. This comes with a bit of practice. Take a look at our tutorial on Short Push.
It is then really important to be able to adjust between the short push and the topspin ball. This transfer especially focused on the movement of your right leg in and out is the key. This isn't an easy skill because you need to be able to move in and out quickly enough to be able to get there and then have enough touch to push the bal short.
By being able to do this you can then keep your opponent away from making the first attack and then they will stray long with one of their shots which then allows you to make the first attack.
In this video, we discuss how to keep the ball low with opening topspin.

Thanks, had a good look at the video and do a lot of practice. At the same time will work further on my serves so that I don't get a short return and can go for 3rd ball attack. Which means not serving backspins too short.
