Vulnerable after looping

Strokes

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of trouble with the shot right after I loop. After I loop/loop drive (off backspin) my opponent blocks/dumps the ball right back at me upon which I have a "free hit." Problem is I'm never able to get back into a proper position to attack with my drive consistently. I've invested in a rubber with a higher throw angle so I won't have to put as much effort into lifting the ball over the net which should buy me a bit more time, but any other advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanx. P.S. keep up the great work

Hi Nigel,

Sounds like there may be tension that is leading to this problem.  It really doesn't take much effort to lift a heavy backspin ball.  It is about getting your technique correct and then letting the arm swing through freely in the correct motion.

This tension during your 'loop' will mean you are also throwing yourself off balance.  If the shoulder isn't moving freely then the whole body will need to move to allow the bat to lift up.  This will always lead to problems.  I don;t think this is an equipment issue.

Think about maintaining your balance throughout your stroke and then the next ball will be more comfortable.  The less effort the better.

When I say effort I mean that I try to brush the ball at high speed in order to get the maximum amount of spin possible....I really rip 'em. But now that you mention it i do end up off balance quite often because T tend to lean back and away from the ball while playing the shot. Thanx for the advice I'll start correcting that immediately. Thanx again. P.S.- I just got advice from an Olympic coach........awesome!!!
