hello! I just returned from Shanghai, China, where I have been doing some serious training, and I am now looking to do some training in Japan within the next few weeks. I live in the U.S. I will be competing to play for the U.S. Junior team later this year. I would love to get in touch with Jesse Bricknell to discuss his training at Waseda University in Tokyo, where I have been aspiring to go. I would really appreciate any help that I can get. Thank you. Please email me at spacepass1@hotmail.com.

Hi Joel,

Sounds like you are doing really well.

To contact Jesse just send a question to him through the Ask the Coach section and he will get it. I am sure he will be able to give you a good insight as to his time there.

Here is a response from Jesse.

It would be similar to the Australian Institute of Sport where players live, eat, train and study at the venue. Obviously players would need to attend school so a close relationship between a school (potentially a specialised one set up in the area) would be an enormous help. Coaches would have to work closely with players and have specific schedules that incorporated school, study and the hours needed to train for the students.

I would imagine it would be similar to the training schedules I've seen in both China and Japan with a morning and afternoon session. Players would need to go school between these two training session and study after dinner in the evening. A potential schedule:

Breakfast: 7.00

Morning training session: 8.00-10.30 (15 minute break half way through)

School: 12-4 (including lunch)

Afternoon training session: 5-7

Dinner: 7-8

Study/free time: Till bed

Weekends could incorporate matches or a light session of training and a at least one day off completely for players to socialise and take a break from the routine of training and studying all week.
