Topspin or chop

Strokes

Hi Coaches

If a ball comes to my backhand and I feel like making a good topspin but don't have enough time to hit the ball at the highest point, should I bend down on my knees and try to topspin or hold myself and make a good chop?

Hi Roman,

I think the first option is to bend your knees and topspin if you can find the time to make the shot.  This will give you a more effective shot.  You can also shorten your stroke to give you more time.

If you chop the long ball it will go back long and make an easier attacking shot for your opponent.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
