Hi, Alois

Which is the difference between the topspin, the counterspin and the loop?

And I have other question: Have you ever been on the ITTF ranking (a professional player)

Thanks

Hi Arturo,

They are all basically the same shot just you need different start and finish positions to allow for the type of ball you are hitting against.

The topspin is usually referred to for a topspin ball that you play against a flat or blocked ball. The counterspin is against a topspin ball.  With this ball you will need to come more forward on the stroke and there is no need to lift the ball because it already has topspin on it.

The loop is a slower topspin usually played against a backspin ball.

Take a look at our lessons on:

Forehand Topspin Against Block

Forehand Topspin Off Backspin

Forehand Topspin Off Backspin

Yes I was on the ITTF ranking list very many years ago.

Alois,

What was actually your highest rank you ever achieved?

I think it was 199 but in those days there were not as many players on the list.  I would have been lower now.

Hi Alois,

Who do you think has a deadly Topspin Stroke in TT like Rafael Nadal in has in Tennis.

I would like to know the above info for Right Handed players, so that I can watch few of their matches to see how they are tackling opponents.

Also what do we call a Topspin stroke in which there is very little Forward movement of Bat but which generates tremendous spin?.

Hi Ganesh,

Most of the top payers have a deadly topspin.  You can take a look at Ma Long.

The stroke where you go more vertically is sometimes known as the Loop.  We have a lesson on it in our lesson on the Forehand Topspin Off Backspin.

I've seen Jeff's FH Alois, but it's more sideways spin.

I've recently played a person at our club, and he rarely hits the ball sideward, all that he is doing during FH  is some sort of lifting motion of elbow and I can hardly hear Ball sound when he is contacting. Then the ball would come straight through the racket(like down the line) and when it lands on table it sort of skids through ball simultaneously jumping a bit. I was just thrown off balance and lost so many points on this particular shot.Even more surprising is his footwork, he rarely takes room to make the shot. He stands tall and just whips a FH vertically when the ball is there just within the Right elbow, a bit like short arm jab.

I thought the Topsin would actually dip the ball but was surprised when it jumped after making contact with table surface.

These are awkward shots.   This is the slow spinny topspin or loop.  We have a lesson on how to play against this ball.  Take a look at how to Counter a Slow Spinny Topspin.

Hi Arturo,

Yes Jeff has been in the Rankings.  He also played at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
