I find, especially when playing against players I have never played before nor seen them play, that I get in the habit of just hitting the ball with no thinking of placement.  What are the steps I need to take to develop strategy and tactics against a player that I have never played before.  I have often been told after the match from a spectator things like "why didn't you hit it to his backhand, it was weak" or "why didn't you push short, he had trouble with that shot".  I have trouble recognizing weaknesses.  Thanks.

Hi Mark,

There are a few things you can do to help here.

The first it to observe the player in a previous match if you get that opportunity,  If not, then use the practice time of 2 minutes to try to find out a few things.

If you look at The PingSkills Vault section of the site and click on the Start Using the PingSkills Vault button you will see that you can create an opponent. In there we list a whole range of things that you can go through.  This is able to be used on portable devices so that you can use it when you are at the hall.  If not, you can write down the things that we suggest you to go through or even do it mentally.  Once you have been through the list you will start to create a picture of your opponent's game and areas that you can work on.

It will take time and practice to get the process right but eventually you will find that you will start to do it automatically.

Hi Aryan,

We don’t have access to your information on the Vault.  If you would like help on a particular opponent, let me know through email and I will see if I can help you.
