Hi Coaches,

I know a book about table tennis that emphasises if you want to analyse your opponent's game you need to know your own style first.

I am a looper, OFF- which means i look for chances before attacking rather than attacking every ball. My coach called me "stable" as in consistent. I am 13, a junior. Consistency as strength and weakness is footwork

Now, can i ask for my style,

WHAT:

SERVES

RECEIVES

STROKES( in rallies)

Should i use?

Thanks

MAT

Hi Mat,

I would start to develop your game to make the attack more often ad get yourself to being an attacking player.  The higher level you get to the more important this will be.  Then you can serve short and use variation of spin.

Receive to positions that doesn't allow your opponent to make the attack. and in the rally, look for the first topspin all the time.

If you want to attack first you need a good serve, and you have to know what kind of return you will get on that serve. only you know what return you will get of whitch serve. most serve returns will come back crosscourt so after you serve be ready to walk around for your forehand topspin.remember you should use more spin on the first topspin and the second topspin can have more of a flatter contact for more speed. only when you are getting a real high return you can just smash it.

Also try to attack every long serve. just ask one of your teammates to do a long serve with topspin, backspin or sidespin and try to loop the ball.

When returing short serves you should look whats on it. is there is topspin or sidespin on it you can just easely flick the ball. When the opponent serves a short backspin ball you should return it with a short push. if your opponent pushes the ball short the most backspin is already gone so you are able to flick it easier now. ofcourse you can use a backhand flick on a backspin serve but i think this is a safer option.

If your opponent returns long you can just loop the ball.

Also if your opponent attacks first you have to try to take it over, ofcousre this is maybe hard to do but try to counterspin the first loop of your opponent to get him into the defending position. Or you can try to block the ball on his elbow so you get a weak return and you can attack back. What i like to do with counterattacking is standing a little bit further away from the table and then its easier for me to attack back.

This is just my style of play so you dont have to do everything the same of what i just wrote but this are some really effective strategies. (atleast for me)

Hopen you can do something with it,

-Edwin

Thanks Edwin. I think your style is very good and i'll try to play a little more like your style. Have to improve my looping speed and spin to be a better player

PS. Thanks Alois for the tip
