Speed v Accuracy

Dear Coach,

When I topspin with full speed, a lot of times the shots are either into the net or outside the table. When I slow down my speed the top spin shots are mostly on the table.

However, I am wondering whether I should continue hitting with top speed so that accuracy develops slowly or try to topspin with a slower speed and gain efficiency first then increase the speed as I get more accurate?

The problem is that when I hit or topspin with slow speed the opponent can kill the ball but those of my tops spins or hits which are at full speed are themselves a killer.

Thanks and regards,

Raj

Hi Raj,

It sounds like you have reasonably good technique when hitting the ball slowly. It also sounds like you are changing your technique too much when you are trying to hit the ball faster.

To hit the ball faster think about maintaining your same stroke and then just increasing the speed your bat travels from the start position to the finish position.

Since you say that your slower ball is quite consistent, work more on the faster ball.

The critical part is to maintain the same start and finish positions initially.
