Small bats for practice

Is using a small bat good for practicing hitting the ball?

I've got a small bat with decently grippy rubber and I'm wondering if it is good for focusing and being able to hit the ball more consistently. Also when I'm playing players that are not as good as me, should I use my small bat to get some extra practice and make the game fairer?

Thank you in advance

Hi Spike,

It has a limited benefit.  It may just raise awareness of watching the ball but you should mainly use your normal bat.  It has a different weight and feel so it is better to use your own bat rather than using a small bat.

Similarly when playing someone of lesser ability, use your normal bat. I think it is a little denigrating to play them with a small bat.

#38 - Backhand 3rd Ball Attack

The backhand topspin off backspin is often considered a harder shot than the forehand. In this week's training session we focus on utilising this shot to make a 3rd ball attack. If you can master this your opponents will find it difficult to stop you attacking and you will constantly have them under pressure.

Another reason for not getting used to hitting with a small bat is that the contact point would be close to the handle of a regular sized bat, which is not the ideal spot.
