Slam Lob dance

Strategy

In high level table tennis there is a pattern where opponents get into a back and forth of slam/lob play. It seems to go on and on and I find it quite boring and appears to me to be a waste of energy. I just find it unappealing and a detriment to the play if it continues very long. Am I alone in feeling this way? What are some create or interesting ways to get out of this dynamic with your opponent?

Hi,

Sometimes this pattern develops when a player is forced back away from the table.  Often it is still a matter of strategy in this situation as attacking player tries to gain the ultimate advantage where they can finish the rally. The attacking player doesn't need to take too many risks as they are in the dominant position.  The defensive player will try to stay in the point as long as possible and force an error.

It may seem like it is a dance but often both players are still strategising to win the point.
