Strokes
How critical is it to have a good full shoulder turn on the forehand counter hit ? As a close to the table and older player I find the speed of the returns preclude a full turn. Pseudo club member coaches are always shouting out " turn more ". As you suggest I try to work on the start and finish of the stroke and can get a decent amount of spin but should I be stepping back a few feet to make a more complete stroke?
Thanks for your advise.
Hi Jeremiah,
When you are close to the table and don't have time it is OK to not turn too much. When you have more time then you should use your shoulders more for more power.
It is always a matter of time. If you are further away from the table then you will have more time to make the full stroke.
How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
