Hi Alois

How to serve a fast, straight and long ball to surprise the opponent. A link for this kind of serve is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6cfozvO35w. Ma Long serve that ball at about 22:30. Thank you

Hi Yap,

To do this you hit the ball a lot flatter to get the speed.  You still need a bit of topspin to get the ball to dip quickly.

In this video he starts in the normal Pendulum serve position and then changes it to the fast topspin serve.  The disguise is very important.  If they see this serve coming, no matter how fast you can do it, it will be an easy ball to attack.

Alois, but if I try to hit the ball so quickly, it will always go out of the table.

Keep practicing.  HE didn’t do it perfectly the first time he tried either.

You can get a little more topspin if it is always going off the end.

Hi Yap,

That is a good idea.

Take a look at this previous response to an Ask the Coach Show. Fast serve down the line.
