What type of footwear is the safest and best for table tennis for a senior player?
Hi Michael,
For a senior table tennis player, the best and safest footwear prioritises stability, grip, cushioning, and lightness, without compromising on movement. Here's what to look for:
1. Good grip (non-marking rubber soles):
A sole with good traction prevents slipping on indoor floors but still allows quick lateral movement.
2. Lightweight design:
Heavy shoes can cause fatigue or slow down movement. Table tennis shoes are usually light to help with agility.
3. Low to the ground:
Shoes with a low profile (minimal heel height) offer better balance and reduce the risk of ankle rolls.
4. Cushioning and support:
Seniors may benefit from added cushioning, especially under the heel and ball of the foot, to reduce joint stress. Some table tennis shoes have minimal cushioning, so if comfort is a concern, you could consider court shoes designed for squash or badminton, which often provide more.
There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!

Often times table tennis shoes are hard to find and try out. Indoor court shoes like volleyball shoes are also worn. I use ASICS Gel-Rocket 11 volleyball shoes. They fit the criteria mentioned.
Good tip Rick. Thanks.
