How to slow down a training patner

Hi, 

My training partners has the skills to play well but he plays really fast. Therefore he makes a lot of unforced errors. I tried to say to slow down but after a few strokes he speeds up again. How can I help him slow down? Are there any slow down exercises you could recommend ?

This is a common challenge, especially with players who love the feeling of speed and attacking play. The key is to help your partner experience the value of slowing down rather than just telling them.

A few things you can try:

1. Explain the Why
Have a calm conversation off the table and explain that slowing down doesn’t mean playing passively — it means playing with control. If they reduce unforced errors, they’ll win more points and gain more consistency, which helps build confidence for faster play later.

2. Structured Rallies
Try controlled drills where the focus is specifically on consistency. For example:

  • 50-ball rally challenge: See if you can keep a rally going for 50 forehands or backhands. This naturally encourages control.

  • 2-speed drill: Agree to hit 5 medium-speed shots, then you can increase the pace.

3. Use Targets
Place cones or small zones on the table and ask your partner to aim for them — this shifts focus from speed to placement. It also adds a layer of challenge without rushing.

4. Record a Session
Sometimes players don’t realise just how fast or inconsistent they’re playing. A quick phone recording can help them see their pace and how it affects the rally.

Helping a partner change habits takes a bit of time and patience. But if you make it part of the shared training goal, they’re more likely to come on board.

The Controller

Most drills involve one person performing the exercise and the other placing the ball as required by the exercise. We call this person placing the ball the controller. When you are acting as the controller it is a great opportunity to practice your blocking and concentration. As blocking is an important part of the game you should be 100% focused at this time. You also owe it to your training partner to be blocking effectively so they get the most from their exercise.
