Hi Alois and Jeff

I recently saw a video on Youtube on Sabine Winter's service. It was like JO Waldner service but this is much faster I think. My question is how would you be able to do this serve efficently and how would this be effect in a match? Here is a link to the video http://youtu.be/QadaWNOW0hs

thank you

Hi Enoch,

This can be an effective serve.  It looks easy enough to set up the target she has there.  It looks like a shoe box lid with a rectangle cut out of it.  Do one for yourself and give it a try.  I am not sure that it is faster than Waldner’s fast serve, but I am biased.

Having the target like that forces you to keep the ball low.  The other thing that you can do is put a strong across the net like we show you in our lesson on Keeping The Ball Low.

Then you need to concentrate on getting the ball to bounce close to you on your side and close to the end line on the other side.

It would be a good surprise serve after serving a lot of short serves.

Japanese youngster Asuka Sakai does an extremely fast serve as well, check this video out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfDVXPrLVkg

He apparently hits the ball with the backhand rubber in a forehand looping action with the forehand rubber looking up.

Yes, but he doesn’t utilise this serve in a match situation very much at all as a fast serve like this is eerily easily countered by an experienced opponent.
