Hi coaches

Some questions I have:

1) What type of rubber can be easier used for loops vs backspin balls: normal rubber or long pimpled rubber?

2) Similar question, but "can be better used" instead

Is it just that you can get more variations of spin with normal grippy rubber or there is there something else?

Hi Roman,

It is easiest and better to use normal rubber to topspin against backspin.  This will allow you to grip the ball and lift it over the net.  The long pimple rubber will not allow that at all.

When playing in doubles I twice used a topspin-like swing to return a chopped ball with long pimples. My fortune was that the ball was coming low over the net and the opponent who served to me didn't move far enough from the table. That's why I was asking

This is a stroke that is possible because the backspin gives the effect of topspin when it hits the long pimples but it is usually more difficult than with normal rubber.
