Strokes
During a rally, I have trouble returning side spin shots. My question is when returning these types of shots when is the best time to hit the ball? Should I attempt to hit the ball right after it hits the table, or should I wait and hit the ball at its apex?
Currently, I use topspin to return these shots and attempt to strike the ball immediately after it hits the table. I understand the racket rudder effect in attempting to keep my return on the table. However, I definitely could use improvement in directing the ball onto the table.
Thanks, Harold
Hi Harold,
I think the top of the bounce is a good time to hit this ball. Since it doesn't have as much topspin you don't have as much margin for error on the return so allowing it to bounce higher will increase your margin. Then focus on putting your own topspin on the return to negate the sidespin on the ball. If you brush the ball fast you will get the ball spinning in the direction you want rather than allowing the sidespin to take effect.
