Hi!alois and jeff.i have a very big problem returning a heavy sidespin serve.whenever i try to return it just spins on my racket and hits the net or falls out of the table. What should i do?
Hi Harikrishnan,
The first thing to do is, watch out for our new DVD Receiving Secrets Revealed!
You need to focus on the angle of your bat and where the ball is going when it hits your bat. Then just turn your bat so that the angle takes it towards the table. You also need to understand the effect of spin. This is learned by understanding some basic principles and then being able to adjust your bat you get the ball back.
If the ball is shooting off to the right hand side, then angle your bat towards the left to counteract the spin and vice versa.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
