Hi Coach,

I have one problem in picking backspin serve of one of my colleague. When i chop or push the backspin serve it jumps when it contact with bat, although i am able to send to the opponent side but it creates very loose return and give too much height. Actually my colleague serve only two kind of heavy backspin serve, he does not know other serve. one is simply heavy backspin serve and another is that i have mentioned above. i am able to read and differentiate between the two serve but not able to counter it. Basically i want to know why ball kick up in the air and how to return back the good return.

And I also want guidance from yourside in returning backspin. How to adjust bat (what is the initial position of bat) when i want to return or hit the backspin before top of bounce and after top of bounce.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Trilochan,

To counter the backspin you need to alter the angle of your bat as you have mentioned.

The other important thing is to keep your hand loose so that the spin has less effect.

The spin makes the ball bite into the rubber and kick out.  If the ball is floating up it may mean that he is putting less backspin on the ball which will cause your return to go higher.

The initial position of the bat is with your striking side facing up.  Then generate a bit of spin of your own by brushing the bottom of the ball.

To contact the ball before or after the top of the bounce you need to have a similar angle and still keep your hand relaxed.  When you contact the ball late it is hared to keep the ball short because it is further away from the net.  It is better to strije the ball early to get it close to the net and keep the ball short and low.
