Hi Alois,

At about 1700+ you can see return being lifted up and a little spin applied on the side spin coming from right to left. What is the correct way to return long or mid distance sidepin serves, is lifting the ball considered safe. Sometimes the long spinny serves stay very low and if you play thru' forward likely to miss it.

Hi Ajay,

Yes, lifting the ball is the best way.  Use a topspin stroke.  The trajectory of the stroke depends on the amount and type of spin.  If the ball has more backspin, then make your stroke more vertical and vice versa.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
