Whenever I play I am sometimes pushed to a hard position to recover from, if im pushed off to the far left or right or I'm defending a smash and concentrating on keeping on the table, if this happens, what should I do?

Hi Harry,

You should try to make a Lob or a Backhand Chop.

if i am pushed back from the table and i am trying to defend a smash, a lob just gives them an opportunity to smash though

It is a difficult position to win a point from.  If you get a bit more time to see the ball then you can try to make a topspin from back there.  If you follow the lesson on the lob it will give you some tips on giving yourself the best chance to win the point while lobbing.
