Hi Alois,
Does it have to be a topspin when lobbing or I can switch with the other spin?

Hi Archel,

Topspin is best because it will force your opponent away from the table and also you will be able to hit the ball faster.

I looked at a video that Joo Se Hyuk used sidespin on the ball. Does it as effective as the topspin?

Hi Archel,

The sidespin can be good because it makes the ball a little harder to track but with topspin you can get the smasher to move further away from the table.  So then they need to make the smash from further away which will give you more time to track it and return it.

hi coach,

i just wanted to ask, what if the attacker decides to stop smashing and he puts a slow gentle stroke ? as we are far away from the table lobbing, we will for sure not be able to reach it on time and will lose a point..so do you have any remedy to this clever playing of attacker cause ive been caught more than a 100 times because of the same thing.. please let me know

CHEERS!!

Hi Parakram,

Make sure you are watching the ball.  If you are watching carefully you will start to pick up some things that the smasher will do.  He will change his backswing slightly.  This will give you the clue to move in closer to the table.

The advantage is to be able to return a hard smash and give you time to get into position for the next ball.

This is a risky shot but if you are in a good position and have time you can attempt it.

i find it helps if you play the return to the opponents backhand as it is harder to return a smash from there although sometimes they will move with the ball so they can execute a forehand smash on the backhand side there is not much you can do to stop them doing this.sometimes i try to play a short, low, heavy sidespin ball which they dont expect from under the table.

It has more topspin which pushes the smasher away from the table.

I am practising lob for 2 months but I can not see any progress. Can you help me out? Is it important to learn lob?

It is not one of the crucial shots Tushar.  It will come with more play and better control and feel for the ball.  I would not make it a priority right now.

Hi Alois

Is it better to lob a smash or block a smash?

They are really different strokes. If you are close to the table you can try and block a smash but it's very difficult since you have so little time and it's hard to control from close to the table. The block would be much harder for you opponent to deal with too since he will have less time to react to your shot.

As the block is so difficult against a smash, most players tend to go back and try to lob the ball to stay in the rally until they can get an opportunity to get back into the rally.
