Hi Alois and Jeff,

I am a left handed player. In a doubles match, when my partner is serving or receiving serves, where should I stand? Usually, I stand left to my partner, but most of the times, when its my turn to return the ball, it is usually on my backhand side and I have to quickly move to cover the spin and angle. A lot of times, I find it difficult to make a good return because I am still moving or not in a good position. My backhand is not very strong and all this movement makes it even worse.

Hi Abhinav,

You should always stand on your partner's right.  So even when they are serving or receiving stand over on their right.  After they serve our receive the ball they should move to their left and then you are both in a better position at the table.

Try it out.  You will be surprised at how effective it is.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.

I agree with alois, this position make the ball tend to come to your forehand side (and also your partner forehand), so you can attack your opponent easier :D
