Hi Pingskills,

I recently started wearing glasses due to my impaired vision. I've been playing for more than four years now and having a pair of glasses can really make things awkward. I'm having difficulty focusing on the ball and my timing is also affected. Do you have any tips on how to play while wearing glasses?

Hi,

Luckily I have never had to wear them so I can't help.  I know some of our readers do wear them so they could share their experiences.

I don't have much problem playing with glasses, but I can imagine it would take some adjustment at first.  There is a bit of impediment to peripheral vision, especially in doubles, and they can get sweaty.  It helps to have some cleaning solution and a clean dry cloth available. In hot humid conditions the glasses fog when I'm sitting still between matches.

I wear bifocals and there are situations where there is a discontinuity when something passes across the near/far line on the glasses.  If my opponent does a high-toss serve and I watch the ball as it goes up and comes down, there is a critical instant where the paddle straddles that line and disturbs my perception, so I find it easier to watch the paddle and wait for the ball to come down.
