Hi Gautam,

Playing Tennis and Table Tennis will complement each other.  You may find that you take a few hits to adjust, but as long as you are wiling to adjust you will do it very easily.

The hitting skills and hand eye coordination are very similar.

The fourth building block of table tennis focuses on developing your serve and return, the starting point of every rally. A strong serve puts pressure on your opponent, while an effective return allows you to take control of the point from the start.

Mastering these skills is critical for success in both training and match play. By improving your serve and return, you’ll gain an edge in every game and set yourself up for victory.

Just want to add my two cents in:  I feel that it can be difficult to do at times in terms of technique since my technique for each sport is pretty different.  I find it useful to remind myself of the proper technique before I play or as I am warming up for either, that way I can pull out the appropriate form.  Alois is of course right that your ability to strike the ball cleanly and react quickly to any ball will improve for both sports when you cross train.

Personally I think playing table tennis and tennis at the same time is like learning French and Spanish at the same time.  The two have a lot of similarities (hand-eye coordination etc) but the similarity can lull you into a false sense of comfort and make you pick up bad habits.  However, if you are careful and (as suggested) remind yourself of the adjustments you have to make when you change sports, it should be fine.  After all, plenty of people speak both French AND Spanish!

Coming primarily from a tennis background, I've found the hardest transition to make into table tennis is the follow through. In table tennis we're taught to finish up around the forehead area for basic counterhitting shots as opposed to a full follow though in tennis. It probly took me a couple months before I was able to remove that habit.

My main problem going the other way (from table tennis to tennis) was that I was trying to use too much wrist in my stroke.

Ji-Soo Woo, I have the same exact case. Let me know how you overcame this. I'm a 1650 ustta player 4 years into pingpong and just started playing tennis. I find it extremely difficult not to use the wrist and keep the racket head tight on contact.
