Penhold loop vs penhold chop

Strokes

I currently am a penhold looper, and I play very aggressive. I also use the RPB, and I was wondering when the appropriate time to chop the ball is, or if i should even use this stroke since I have been successful at using the loop.

Hi Austin,

If you are finding the loop a good stroke for you then you should continue to use this in preference to the chop.

If you are away from the table and you are caught for time or you think a chop may help you then it is OK to play one ball with backspin.  You don't have the use the Reverse side though, you can use the normal side for this.

If you are close to the table and the ball is too short on the table, then you can also play a push stroke with backspin but again you can use the normal side of the racket for this.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
