Serving
Hi coach! I am a penholder and I have found it hard to make a short & heavy backspin serve, instead my serve always carries more or less sidespin, and it's always a long one. please tell me what I have been doing wrong, I am very eager to master a short & heavy backspin serve with my penhold grip, thanks.
Hi Heang,
The key is getting the bat angle right. Focus on getting the bat flat, parallel to the ground to get pure backspin. See if you can get someone to watch you and see if your bat if flat on contact. If not get a video and then watch it for yourself. Work on getting the tip of your bat higher.
The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.

thanks coach, and one more thing is that should I serve it vertically like Wang Hao does or should I serve it horizontally like Ma Lin? because the latter has more possibility to give my serve more sidespin, I think I should focus on serving vertically, what do you think?
