Penhold backhand

Strokes

Hi Alois and Jeff,

How do penhold grip players not hit their fingers when they play a backhand shot? Watching Wang Hao, his fingers seem to cover the bottom half of the bat when he plays a backhand. Surely that is a big disadvantage of playing penhold?

Hi Simon,

It is a skill that they practice.  They tend to curl the fingers up when playing the reverse backhand to get them out of the way.

Traditionally the backhand was the big disadvantage of playing with the penhold grip but ow with the way these players use the Reverse Penhold Backhand it isn't such a disadvantage any more.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
