Serving
hi masters. I tend to look at the ball during contact to my bat when i do pendulum and reverse pendulum. It became my habit during service. But my friend told me that i shouldnt look at the ball. Im having a hard time hitting it without looking.rnrnIs it normal to look at the ball during these type of service?rnrnThanks.
Hi Jolas,
It is fine to look at the ball during service. In fact I would encourage it.
Serving in table tennis is about much more than just getting the ball into play; it's about setting the pace, controlling the game, and exploiting your opponent's weaknesses from the very first touch. In This Video, You'll Discover:
- The Danger Zone: Learn why serving to your opponent’s comfort zone is a mistake and where you should aim instead.
- Wide Serves: Understand the tactical advantage of serving wide and how it can open up the table for your next shot.
- Targeting Weaknesses: Tips on identifying and exploiting your opponent's weaker side with precision serves.
- Varying Your Serve Position: The benefits of serving from different positions and how it can confuse and unbalance your opponent.
- The Crossover Point: How to target the elusive crossover point (the transition between forehand and backhand) to force errors or weak returns.

It is an interesting question. I tried to think what I do when serving. I think that for all serves but the pendulum I watch the ball very closely. However for the pendulum serve the ball is so close to my body that to watch it right onto the bat does make me feel a little bit funny. So I think that I don't actually watch the ball all the way onto my bat for the pendulum.
Ideally you would watch the ball all the way onto the bat.
I'd love for other players to concentrate on just how much they watch the ball during their pendulum serve and leave a comment to let us know.
