Serving
Hi PingSkills,
What is the ready position for the pendulum serve so that we can move to the next ball
as i standing and serve, it make me hard to get into the position so my coach tell me to put my right foot at the back of my left foot (for the right hand) just like the position to run. so that i can easily move my foot to the ready position by moving my right foot. what do you think about it? or is there really have a position where doing the pendulum serve?
and also, can i put my thumb anywhere when doing the serve as if i put my index finger at the middle or higher on the bat, my thumb will move across and straight and touch the rubber rather than the paddle
what do you think about it ?
Hi Frendy,
The position you describe is a good one. This allows you to move quickly into position. YOu will notice that most top players start in this position for the Pendulum serve.
The finger position is also OK. Then get the normal grip back as soon as you serve.
The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.

what i mean is where's the best place for me to serve, not the best placement of the ball
Hi Frendy,
It will depend a little upon your opponent but try from a few different positions and see what you like. A lot of people prefer to serve from the backhand side as it opens up the rest of the table for their forehand.
