How can i return Ovtcharovs tomahawk like serve with my forehand having too much underspin and side spin on it effevtively in order to avoid a loop attack from my opponent its difficult for me to return it short on the table. Tell me a side of the table so that probablity of loop attack is minimum.

I am right handed player and same is my opponent reply me soon.

Hi Haseeb,

You need to aim to your right. To do this you need to turn your wrist back.  If the serve has backspin then utilise the push for the return and keep your hand and fingers relaxed.

Which side you return it to depends on your opponent's strengths.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
