Hi alois and jeff,

My coach has insisted i learn a completely new backhand technique as he felt it is my old one that pulled me down!  i have never played a long stroke in my life and seriously need help with this.

starting off from counterhits how do i change my stroke as i get a lot of spin in the ball with a long stroke (but hardly any pace;its almost like those slow spinny topspins) and how to use wrist and impart more speed?

Moreover wont longer strokes be a headache for over the table shots?

much appreciated!

Hi Shripathi,

The longer stroke to start with will add more consistency to the stroke.  The shorter stoke will be better once you are more advanced.

Anticipation

How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
