Strokes
Hi Alois,
Greetings from India!
Could please discuss the mechanics of recovery after a forehand topspin stroke? I understand that as a player we need to keep the shoulder and arm as relaxed as possible but is there a effortless way to learn a fast recovery after hitting a forehand topspin shot? in terms of how the arm should proceed after finishing in the salute position and how to quickly prepare for the follow up topspin shot again?
Thanks and regards,
Mudit
Hi Mudit,
The best way is to come back down along the same path that yo made your stroke. That way you are not going across your eyes and covering your vision of the ball.
This brings you down to the ready position after the shot.
You also need good strength in your stomach area to stop the rotation of your stroke and return quickly. This will help you to get back into your basic ready position again.
Focus on these two areas and see if it improves your recovery.
How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.

Hi, coach. Do you have any special drill/practice that focus on recovery after stroke? I also find that my recovery is slow.
For Premium members we have the Improving Your Reflexes. The main thing is to maintain balance with your strokes so that it is easier to move to the next ball. Always track the ball all the way in and out.
