Alois and Jeff,

Superb site and great content keep up the good work.

The league I compete in has reached halfway through the season. I have been reviewing my performances and against weaker players I have been playing well. I use 3rd ball attacks and aggressive serve returns to take the initiative. Against stronger players I have struggled. Most seasons I manage wins against some strong players but I seem to have hit a wall. Now my 3rd ball attacks aren't working and my serve returns are being countered. If though I am more conservative and wait, I have won some great points on 5th or 7th ball. So, do I persist trying to be steady to get into a rally or keep trying the 3rd ball attacks in the hope I improve enough for these to be effective.

Hi Nigel,

Tis is difficult to tell exactly what is happening without seeing some points.  It sounds like you are better off being a bit more conservative on the return and working into a point.

Each opponent is different even if they are better or lower ranked.  Think about what is necessary to gain the initiative.

It is probably about making good decisions on each ball and taking the opportunity to attack when you have a good opportunity and being more conservative when it is appropriate.
