How long of doing repetition drills for strokes will the results start to seep into a game?  I find that my form is ok during a drill, but collapses during a game.

Hi Myrna,

It can take a while.  It is really important to have that basic grounding though otherwise it is difficult to develop further.

When you have your good basic movements then you will find it easier in matches to be able to get to balls and move more naturally.

For more game play you can implement more match drills.

Take a look through our Match Routine Drills lesson which will give you some good ideas to improve this area of your game.

The Controller

Most drills involve one person performing the exercise and the other placing the ball as required by the exercise. We call this person placing the ball the controller. When you are acting as the controller it is a great opportunity to practice your blocking and concentration. As blocking is an important part of the game you should be 100% focused at this time. You also owe it to your training partner to be blocking effectively so they get the most from their exercise.

I feel as if I'm ready for the olympics when playing against the robot and go into matches with loads of confidence.  Then I get clobbered game after game vs human and its back to the drawing board.  This cycle repeats itself, but WE ARE getting better every day!
