Hi Abbas,

One good way is with you serve.  By varying the spin on the serve you can sometimes get them to pay the ball higher.

If you have a good heavy backspin and then a no spin serve that looks similar the opponent will often hit the return higher.

Another way is to vary the spin on your pushes.  Again vary between heavy and less backspin will lead to you getting some higher balls to attack.

You could even add some topspin to your serves that look like backspin.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
