Hi coach,

I was watching a match between Ma Long and Zhang Jike from Kuwait Open. Suddenly Ma Long pulled of this weird reverse backhand serve;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKJDrydfl-0

This is a video to show you the serve so you know what Im talking about.

Ive already tried the serve but I keep hitting the side of my bat. I already tried to just stand to the table and do no spin serves with my bat upside down (Just hitting it flat). But when I try the real serve I keep hitting the side of my bat. I have no clue how to get the feeling on this serve.

Hope you can give me some tips,

Edwin

Hi Edwin,

This is a good change up of the serve.  When trying to hit it really open up the angle of your racket and get the racket travelling more towards the side rather than coming forward.

Okay I am at least able to hit the ball good right now but I cant control it, it goes always to the right side and with very high bounces

I tried it the other day and it was difficult to get the feel for it.  It was difficult to watch the ball during the throw up.  It will just take more time. It sounds like you have already made progress.

Hi Alois,

I found out I have to throw the ball up more backwards in the direction of my body and lift my left foot, turn my upper body a little bit to the left with my right elbow in front of my face and then just move my elbow outwards and brush the ball. Im still struggling to hit the ball good every time and get it lower over the net. So Im starting to get the hang of the serve.
